Google's parent company is headed for its worst earnings-day selloff on record after investors balked at how much cash the company is burning through.

Alphabet Shares Set to Sink as Cash Burn Shocks Wall Street

Alphabet shares were down roughly 10% in premarket trading, a move that would mark the steepest single-day drop following an earnings report in the company's history. The culprit wasn't revenue or profit growth but cash flow: Alphabet posted a bigger negative free cash flow figure than Wall Street had modeled, raising fresh questions about the pace and payoff of its spending. Management did not back away from its full-year spending plans despite the cash shortfall, signaling the company intends to keep investing heavily even as the market reacts poorly to the near-term financial strain.

The drop lands at a sensitive moment for the broader market. The S&P 500 was up 0.28% in a quiet Thursday session, trading at 7,743.98 and still within striking distance of its 52-week high of 7,844.52. The Nasdaq Composite, home to Alphabet and its megacap peers, was similarly higher by 0.27% at 26,549.85, well above its 52-week low of 20,690.25 but still shy of its own record near 27,722.75. The Dow, less exposed to tech earnings swings, edged up 0.19% to 52,475.10. A double-digit decline in one of the index's largest components could weigh heavily on Nasdaq performance once trading opens, even with the broader tape holding steady.

Alphabet's spending has been central to its AI buildout, with the company pouring money into data centers, chips and cloud infrastructure to compete with rivals in the race to dominate artificial intelligence. Investors have generally tolerated heavy capital expenditure from megacap tech companies as long as it appeared to translate into growth. A free-cash-flow miss of this scale suggests the costs of that buildout are outpacing what the market had priced in, and reiterating spending guidance without offering new reassurance on returns gave shareholders little reason to stick around.

The scale of the expected drop is notable even by the standards of a sector accustomed to volatile earnings reactions. A 10% single-session decline would erase tens of billions of dollars in market value for a company of Alphabet's size, and it sets a new bar for how sharply the stock has reacted to a quarterly report. Investors will be watching closely to see whether the selloff holds through the trading day or whether bargain hunters step in once the initial shock fades.

The reaction also raises the stakes for other technology giants still to report. With AI-related capital spending now a major swing factor across the sector, Alphabet's cash flow miss may prompt investors to scrutinize upcoming reports from its peers with a more skeptical eye on spending-versus-payoff math rather than simply cheering higher capex totals as a sign of confidence.
