Ukraine Presses Donbas Gains as Western Backing Grows Uncertain

Ukrainian troops have reclaimed significant ground in the Donbas region through a campaign known as Operation Vivaldi, according to on-the-ground reporting from the front lines. Satellite communications provided by Elon Musk's Starlink network have proven central to coordinating the advance, allowing units to maintain contact and direct artillery and drone operations in areas where conventional infrastructure has been destroyed by years of fighting.

The territorial gains mark a rare bright spot for Kyiv after a grinding stretch of the war in which Russian forces had steadily absorbed Ukrainian positions across the eastern front. Military officials and soldiers involved in the operation describe it as evidence that Ukraine can still mount effective counteroffensives nearly four years into the conflict, despite manpower shortages and battlefield exhaustion.

That momentum, however, is colliding with growing unease in Kyiv over the reliability of American support. Relations between Ukrainian leadership and the Trump administration have deteriorated in recent weeks, tempering the optimism generated by the Donbas advance. Soldiers and officials quoted in the field reporting say the uncertainty hanging over continued US assistance is casting a shadow over tactical successes that might otherwise be celebrated more fully.

The tension echoes broader friction within the Western alliance over how to handle the war. Italy's defence minister, Guido Crosetto, separately told the BBC that Washington's move to scale back support for Ukraine amounts to a serious misjudgment, warning it risks extending Russia's invasion rather than bringing it closer to an end. His comments reflect mounting frustration among European allies who fear that wavering US commitment could undercut the kind of battlefield progress now being made around the Donbas.

For Ukraine, the stakes of that political uncertainty are immediate and practical. Starlink connectivity and other forms of American-linked technology and material support have underpinned much of the country's ability to coordinate complex operations like Vivaldi. Any disruption to that support, officials fear, could blunt the kind of gains currently being reported in the east, even as troops on the ground continue to push forward.

What happens next will likely hinge on diplomatic signals from Washington in the coming weeks, as European governments weigh whether to fill any gap left by reduced US backing. Kyiv's military leadership, meanwhile, is expected to press the current advantage along the Donbas front while the operational window remains open, aware that political headwinds could shift the calculus quickly.
