Anthropic Reportedly Eyes Second $45 Billion Compute Deal With Nscale

Just two months after a landmark infrastructure agreement, Anthropic is said to be negotiating a nearly identical mega-deal that would roughly double its total commitment to a single cloud compute partner.

Anthropic Reportedly Eyes Second $45 Billion Compute Deal With Nscale

Anthropic and Nscale struck a $45 billion compute arrangement in August, a deal that signaled just how much capital AI labs are now pouring into the physical infrastructure needed to train and run their models. According to new reports, the two sides are now discussing a follow-up agreement of comparable size, suggesting Anthropic's appetite for computing capacity is accelerating rather than leveling off.

The scale of these numbers underscores a broader shift in the AI industry: the real battleground has moved beyond model quality alone and into who can secure enough chips, power, and data center capacity to keep scaling. Nscale, a compute provider positioning itself as an alternative to hyperscale giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, has emerged as a significant partner for Anthropic in that race, even as the company behind Claude also maintains ties to other major cloud providers.

A second deal of this magnitude would raise fresh questions about how Anthropic intends to fund tens of billions of dollars in compute spending, and about the long-term financial structures underpinning these agreements. Multi-year compute commitments of this size typically involve complex financing, including equity stakes, long-term contracts, and sometimes vendor financing arrangements that have drawn scrutiny across the AI sector as labs race to lock in capacity years in advance.

It also reflects the intensifying competition between Anthropic and rivals like OpenAI, both of which have been signing enormous infrastructure contracts to ensure they aren't bottlenecked by chip or data center shortages as demand for their models grows. Compute has become as strategically important as talent or algorithms, with the companies that can guarantee access to it gaining a meaningful edge in training larger, more capable systems.

Neither company has confirmed final terms, and talks could still fall apart or change in scope. But if finalized, a second $45 billion commitment would push Anthropic's total compute spending with Nscale alone into the neighborhood of $90 billion, intensifying scrutiny of whether the AI industry's infrastructure buildout is sustainable or is inflating a bubble that could strain even well-funded labs if growth or revenue fails to keep pace with these enormous capital outlays.
